Eastern or Western Culture - Which One Is Better ?

This is an interesting point on debate of which is better; Eastern or Western Culture, but the question in itself is wrong as we are comparing apples and oranges are not we. We wonder which one is better without realising that these cultures are not good or bad , they are different. It does not actually matter which you think is better . Our cultures are totally different . We need to understand this and respect not only our culture but others' culture as well . It is totally wrong to compare these cultures .
In the movie about World War II a Japanese Political Prisoner in the United States was asked; “Who do you want to win the war?” In the movie his answer showed much wisdom as he said; “ If your mother and father are fighting, do you want one to kill the other or do you just want them to stop fighting?” Well with that said and if you are a God fearing individual what do you think your God might say about this? Do you really believe that a God believes that these questions of which culture is better; Eastern or Western Culture are relevant? When Gandhi was asked what he thought of Western Culture, he said; “I think it would be a good idea.” You know so do I, I wish we would live as we promise ourselves rather than in hypocrisy, how about you?
Here are some thoughts of people living in these cultures -
"Eastern teenagers are more hard working but Western teenagers are more creative due to their freedom to express. So each has their own."

"I live in a western culture and i have lived in an eastern one too.i think in east the youth is more concentrated on progressing, career, studies, everyone wants to go to a classy university study well and make a name.in west because their country supports them in all ways they take it for granted, they r not that much in to studies , because they start living alone at an early age they have to find a short cut to earn money so the start going for jobs like vaitering in hotels, or others jobs of that kind, these jobs in western countries pay really well and u can easily have a decent life doing these.youth of west are more wild they r more in to today and think less of future but in east we r more concern about our tomorrow.i cant say which is better because the lifestyle and thinking is different so people grow up to be that way."
Conclusion
We should respect other cultures and the people following them . We also need to understand that comparing cultures or believing that one culture is superior or inferior is wrong . We .are all beautiful creations of God and all of us are equal before him .

Your life depends on the place you are brought up

Here we have compared the lives of the children living in Samoan Islands to those living in Madhya Pradesh (India) during the 20th century.

Growing up in Samoa in the 1920s

The Samoan islands are part of a large group of small islands in the southern part of the Pacific Ocean.

According to the research reports on Samoan society in 1920s children did not go to school. They learnt many things like how to take care of children or do household work from older children and from adults.Fishing was a very important activity on the Islands.Young people therefore learnt to undertake long fishing expeditions.

As soon as the babies could walk , their mothers or other adults no longer looked after them. Older children , often as young as 5 years old , took over this responsibility . Both boys and girls looked after their young siblings. But , by the time a boy was about nine years old , he joined the older boys in learning outdoor jobs like fishing and planting coconuts.Girls had to continue looking after small children or do errands for adults till they were teenagers . But once they became teenagers they had much more freedom . After the age of fourteen or so , girls also went on fishing trips, worked in the plantations , learnt how to weave baskets . Cooking was done in special cooking-houses , where boys were supposed to most of the work while girls helped with the preparations.

Growing up in Madhya Pradesh in the 1960s

From class 6 onwards , boys and girls went to separate schools . The girls' school was designed very different from the boys' school . They had a central courtyard where they played in total seclusion and safety from the outside world . The boys' school had no such courtyard and the playground was just a big space attached to the school . Every evening , once school was over , the boys watched as hundreds of school girls crowded the narrow streets. As these girls walked on the streets , they looked so purposeful. This was unlike the boys who used the streets as a place to stand around idling , to play , to try out tricks in with their bicycles. For the girls , the street was simply a place to get straight home . The girls also went in groups , perhaps because they also carried fears of being teased or attacked.

What do we conclude?

After reading this we realise that there are many different ways of growing up. Also, societies make clear distinctions between boys and girls.

Suggestions

We are living in the 21st century today and even today the society makes distinctions between girls and boys and this starts from a very young age . We are , for example, given different toys to play with.Toys become a way of telling children that they will have different futures when they become men and women. The difference is created in the smallest and most everyday things . How girls must dress , what games boys should play , how girls need to talk softly or boys need to be tough and the list goes on. Lets stop this discrimination today . And treat boys and girls equally . Lets understand that girls are no less than boys. Lets start giving girls equal opportunities that the boys are being given and change the world because together we can !

Opinion -according to this picture the western seem to be much more straight forward whereas the asian come to the same conclusion after a lot of processing. This may lead to tension and further to health problems.

Travelling- It looks like the western believe in leaving in the present. This picture teels us that they like to see and enjoy. whereas asian believe in storing time for the future. They like to capture things so that they can see and enjoy it again.

Handling of Problems - The western face the problems as they come....they go deep in the problem and then fix it....on the other hand asians try to be on the safer side....they try to move away from the problem

Things that are new - It looks as if the western take time in accepting new things whereas the asians are curious and jump on new things

Differences between the cultures of the two

Dividing the worlds'cultures into two is rather simplistic.
We normally say this to mean asian v/s european. This negates the views of the africans and the latin americans.

Western culture is very individual centered. It is also based on material conquest and is much moreopen to new ideas.Conflicting ideologies are not unusual within one community.Competition is more important than cooperation.

Eastern culture is very community oriented. It emphasizes tradition and is more patient when it comes to adapting new ideas. This is not to say that it won't adapt new ideas. It will just be more skepitcal of them at first. Homogenius ideologies are not unusual because of the emphasis on community. Cooperation is more important than competition.d
